Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach on the 24th of August, 1972. DuVernay was motivated to pursue her love of art by DuVernay's aunt Denise when she was a child. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her pursue art literature and the theater in the daylight. DuVernay fell in love with the 1961 film West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay learnt by doing that art is a great tool for social activism. Similarly DuVernay's mother was socially aware and taught that she could express her thoughts through the art of. DuVernay was a resident of Compton during the majority of her childhood, but she spent every summer in the company of the extended family of her father in Lowndes County Alabama. Her father was a witness to the historic march of Civil Rights Movement over the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was influenced by her summers in Selma and decided to make an documentary on King's father, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate of Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California in 1990. After graduating she attended her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with degrees in English as well as African American studies. When she was studying, DuVernay was interested in creating for the broadcast media. DuVernay was an intern at CBS News at the time of O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was able to recall being assigned an assignment to watch the home and looking through the waste from one of juries. Her tasks left her disappointed with journalism so she made the decision to go into the industry of public relations. DuVernay was immediately hired after graduating from college as an assistant publicist in a small studio. From this position she started her own public relations company known as The DuVernay Agency in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has also launched lifestyle networks as well as promotional campaigns, such as the Urban Beauty Collective.
